AI Declaration
Like many solo builders today, I use AI to increase both what I'm able to do and how quickly I can do it. Below I describe exactly how AI is used on the BouncyBits project, and where it is not.
App concept and features
100% HumanThe initial idea came from my husband, who asked me to build a (much simpler) app to track all the suspension settings on our bikes. I expanded on the idea based on our needs as keen mountain bikers and through discussions with various mountain biking friends. For example, I spoke to parents with kids who race downhill, friends who manage amateur race teams, mountain bike coaches etc. Many of the advanced features come directly from community suggestions.
When I started the project, there was only a handful of similar apps on the market and they all had shortcomings. BouncyBits is built exactly according to my personal software philosophy: simple to use, adaptable, minimal mandatory fields, local-only storage, no account, no sneaky costs, and only as sticky as it needs to be.
Architectural design
70% Human30% AIThe majority of the architectural concept was prepared by me. I had a clear vision of how the app should work under the hood, so as to achieve the desired flexibility and customisability. I used AI to help me select the best building blocks (e.g. open source code libraries) to achieve my vision.
Coding
5% Human95% AII am a software engineer by trade, but had never built a mobile app before. I use AI extensively to write the code for the app and for this website. I almost never prompt a complete feature in one go, but rather build step-by-step and review the code to make sure the AI agent faithfully implements my request, and sticks to my coding best practices.
Design
70% Human30% AIThe majority of the design (colour scheme, animations, layouts, UX) is done by me. AI is primarily used to create the first functional version of a screen or page, and for design ideation.
Text copy
50% Human50% AIIn general, I use AI to create a first version of the copy in the app and on the website, and rewrite to reduce verbosity and add my personal touch.
Translation
10% Human90% AII rely heavily on AI for translations. During the initial development phase, I sought out native speakers who are also mountain bikers to validate the translations. Now all new translations are done by AI based on translation rules covering technical terms, spelling, and tone.
Marketing strategy
50% Human50% AII worked together with AI to develop an app marketing strategy, which I am very slowly implementing.
Marketing materials
80% Human20% AII have an app business card and promotional sticker. I've used AI to ideate on the copy, and to generate some illustrative elements. The rest has been painstakingly layered together in Photoshop.
Social media posts are always 100% written by me.
